Post-study work rights
for international students to boost skills
The Australian
government will elongate the post-graduation employment period for
international students to strengthen the pipeline of skilled workers.
Post-graduation
employment rights for selected degrees in areas of proven skills deficit
increase as follows:
• 2 to 4 years for
selected bachelor's degrees
• For selected
master's degrees she
• 4 to 6 years for
selected PhDs.
A working group will
be set up to advise the Home and Education Ministers on the development of this
and other related issues.
Working Group members
include representatives from the International Education Council, the National
Higher Education Federation, Australian Universities, and the Department of Home
Affairs and Education.
The group will report
to the Minister by 28 October 2022.
International
Education will also benefit from her $36.1 million government investment in
visa processing to support her 500 Surge employees over the next nine months.
Minister O'Neill announced today that, following feedback from stakeholders,
working hours for international students will be limited again next June.
Hours are agreed to
ensure a proper balance between work and study.

Currently, only 16% of
international students remain in school after completing their studies.
This means they can
stay longer and use the skills they learned in Australia to address some of the
current chronic talent shortages.
