The Near East University, a higher education facility, was founded in 1988 by Gunsel. It started with two faculties and has subsequently established 14 more faculties four graduate schools, 15 research centers, and a faculty of medicine which was introduced in 2008. Facilities are all located inside the school premises along with Near East College (middle and high school levels), the Near East Primary School, and the Near East Kindergarten. The university is located near the city of Nicosia, accessible through the Near East Boulevard. There is easy transportation between the city and the campus which is made possible by the frequent buses. The campus has a very large library that covers an area of over 15,000 square meters; the library has over 1 million printed materials and over 150 million electronic sources of information accessible at any time. In 2019 the university signed a protocol with the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism that foresaw the sharing of its electronic resources with 1118 libraries in Turkey.
