Former CSUN Dean Helps Set Global Standards in STEM

When looking for engineering and computer science degrees, make sure the universities you're considering are  ABET (Accreditation Council for Engineering and Technology) Technology) recognition. The educational standards they set have become the basis of quality for STEM disciplines around the world.

As you'd expect, CSUN is ABET certified, but there's more to it than that. They are not only recognized but formerly Dean, Head of Department and Professor, Dr. S.K. Ramesh is now the President of ABET! Dr. Ramesh has been the driving force behind innovation at CSUN, and his role as President is a further mark of excellence for CSUN, further reinforcing the school's role in setting  standards for specialized training institutions  in more than

0 countries.

CSUN's College of Engineering and Computer Science operates nine bachelor's degree programs for more than

,300 undergraduate students and ten graduate programs for

55 students. There are 5 specialized faculties in the school:

 1. Construction and Construction Management

 2. Computer Science

 3. Electrical and Computer Engineering

4. Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Management

 5. Mechanical Engineering

Wondering what it would be like to be an engineering student at CSUN? Check out our short video below about Hrithik Das from Bangladesh, a computer engineering student whose parents said he was too young to go abroad. Listen to what prompted him to follow his heart and study in the United States at California State University Northridge.

Gaining three years of professional experience after graduating in the US

As mentioned by Hrithik, the projects he works on at CSUN use current industry technologies, making it easy for him to transition to work after graduation. By combining the academic knowledge you gain in the classroom with real-world projects, you'll have a higher chance of being employed after graduation. And if you are studying in the US, you can apply for the Optional Practical Training (OPT) Program for a chance to stay in the US and work.

In fact, you can even sign up for a STEM-related extension that allows you to stay for up to three years! It gives you even more opportunities to gain work experience, network in competitive industries, experience the American work culture firsthand, and of course, it gives you a great return on investment. an even larger degree than that of the US.

Here's what you need to keep in mind about OPT:

 • Eligible students can apply to receive an OPT work permit up to  12 months  before completing their undergraduate studies (completed first) and/or upon completion of a university degree (post-degree).

 • If you have completed a degree in certain STEM fields (see  list here), you can apply for a 2

-month extension of your  OPT work permit upon completion.

About half of  international student visa holders under OPT are offered work in professional, scientific or technical services, such as computer programming, computer systems or software design , biotechnology research and development as well as manufacturing, including semiconductor and electronic engineering. The US Department of Labor reports that the average starting salary for international students graduating from OPT programs was nearly $87,000 in 2019.

Where do these talented international students end up? Many work for tech companies like Amazon, Integra, Intel, Google, and Microsoft. These top five companies hired more than 1,000 OPT employees each in 2018. Among the top 15 companies that hire OPT graduates is the well-known company Apple, which has close ties to California State University Northridge as evidenced by a newly announced partnership.

Apple chooses CSUN for new innovation project

To inspire more students to take up STEM studies, Apple approached universities across America to explore new ways of expanding and enhancing educational opportunities for students, in particular Latinx and other students from historically underserved groups.

Given its credentials and student population, CSUN was chosen from all the other universities in the U.S. as the new home for a Global Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Equity Innovation Hub, created in a partnership between Apple and the state of California.

Plans have already begun for virtual programs and the new building will open in 2024, complete with research labs and a maker-space. It will be “a place to visit and a virtual source of ongoing education programs through mentorship opportunities, connections to STEM leaders and employers, and access to interdisciplinary STEM research.”

Apple will provide “innovative technology, design support and thought partnership” both as the project develops and once it’s up and running.

Competitions and clubs help you take an active role in research and experimentation. CSUN is located at the heart of Southern California's creative and technology economy, known as Silicon Beach, as a gateway to a vast network of businesses and a variety of careers after graduation. .

In addition to  work experience you can gain through internships or OPT, there are also plenty of opportunities to participate in student competitions and  clubs that focus exclusively on STEM fields.

For example, a group of CSUN mechanical engineering students won several awards in a NASA competition in the spring of 2021. They were all members of the student group of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Ky at CSUN. The project is part of the NASA MINDS University Design Program, a semester-long experiment that challenges college students to design and build technologies that could be used in NASA's Artemis mission,  aims to make land the first woman and person of color on the moon by 2022.

This is not the first time CSUN has partnered with NASA. In the past, two  electrical and computer engineering professors have overseen CubeSat: a box-sized satellite created by students and launched from the International Space Station, which is currently supporting research of NASA. The

CSUN STEM students regularly compete in a variety of competitions, from Matador Motorsports  building a concrete canoe to their VEX robot club (Matabots), even being ranked in ten robotics teams. number one in the world in 2016.

CSUN has over 300 student clubs and organizations, and several STEM-related organizations including the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Association of Hispanic Professional Engineers Department, National Association of Black Engineers, Association of Female Engineers, and Federation of Asian and Pacific Islander Student Organizations.
